Steve has been visiting coral reefs around the world that are struggling and dying out. He and his team have been experimenting with recording sounds of healthy coral reefs and playing them back in the water to unhealthy coral reefs to see what happens.
Incredibly, many unhealthy coral reefs are thriving with life again, coming back to life just from the sound of healthy coral reefs. The next step is gathering sounds from healthy underwater soundscapes worldwide and mashing them together to create a world that sounds healthy.
Steve is traveling around the Great Barrier Reefs to see what brings them back to life. The technology is simple: a little underwater microphone plays back through a speaker used for synchronized swimming, making it accessible gear. This is something people could theoretically do in their own areas.
Additionally, it's giving people the opportunity to hear fish sounds, which many have never heard before. Steve is eager to work with everyone, as his pure goal is to benefit nature and restore it to its former state, setting aside ego to help the world.
