Women in STEM Conference: Bridging Gaps and Driving Change
Dr Judith Abolle Okoyeagu hosted a fantastic event this week - the Women in STEM Conference, celebrating, connecting and learning from women in this field about how we can do even more to increase success. An inspiring event, with academia, industry, and other sectors coming together to bridge gaps and drive meaningful change. Dr Judith described the event as a movement, a moment in history, and a step towards lasting change. Speakers identified the importance of widening access, creating alternative entry points, fostering a sense of belonging, and adapting to diverse learning needs. Also how girls need role models in this field and to hear from a young age about the difference they can make in the world. Along with the importance of networking and supporting each other. Increasing awareness of opportunities, like uni short courses, especially when returning from career breaks or looking to change career direction. Key takeaways from speaker Gillian King: • Work hard – go above and beyond • Be kind – lift others up • Give back – inspire the next generation The event also collated information from attendees as part of a research project to be submitted to Scottish Government. Hopefully, further events will follow.
